Traveling is a privilege, and in honor of that truth I will usually look for a way to contribute to the area I’m visiting, especially as someone from a resource-rich country. Tourism dollars are one thing but if you are able to directly contribute to a local organization, your money can go that much further.
Animal rescues have always been close to my heart because I grew up with a mom who always brought home strays of all kinds. Turtles, birds, kittens, dogs, horses, goats, longhorn cows, donkeys; you name it, she opened the door and still does to this day. So when I’m abroad and notice a prominent population of strays, I will research local organizations and reach out to learn the best way to help. Anytime there’s a chance to go to a shelter or sanctuary, I’ll clear a day on the schedule for a visit which usually results in some of the most memorable experiences of a trip. In countries where the need for rescue efforts is well-known, like Bali, I’ll usually make contact with shelters before traveling to see if they are in need of any in-person volunteer aid.
Eventually the goal would be for all of my travels to revolve around this core purpose.
